Wilde is seated at an angle, his right elbow on the back of his chair, in day dress with a flower in his buttonhole, his gloves between his hands.
According to the National Portrait Gallery (London) this photograph was taken on 28th May 1889, at the time that Wilde was writing ‘Salomé.’ He was a married man with a young family and, for the time being, was considered to be comparatively respectable.
