The story of Charles Bianconi (1786-1875) who revolutionized the transport system of nineteenth-century Ireland. This full-length biography draws largely on his private papers and diaries. The author describes his is youth in Italy, his early days as a pedlar in Ireland, and his rise to a near-monopoly of transportation throughout his adopted country. His life spanned many important events including the Famine in the 1840s and he became a close friend of Daniel O'Connell.
