Between 1929 and 1949, Giraud produced sixteen annuals in the Bookano Pop-Up Series. He coined the title, Bookano, by combining the words "book" and "Meccano," the name of a popular mechanical toy. The series represented the first truly "automatic" books, with the turning of the page, whole forms and figures popped into shape, viewable from all four sides.
