In Great Haste. The Letters of Michael Collins and Kitty Kiernan. Pp 233. Dublin: Gill & Macmillan, 1983. First edition. Cloth boards & pictorial dust jacket. Small smudge to upper right margin of front endpaper, otherwise a fine copy. Several newspaper clippings loosely inserted.
The letters document the growing love affair between Collins and Kiernan. They were written between 1919 and 1922 and cover the period when Michael Collins was in London during the Treaty negotiations and during the Civil War period. The originals were purchased by the late Peter Bary (former Fine Gael TD ) and handed over to the State in 2000 where they are held by Cork Public Museum at Fitzgerald Park. The distinguished writer & historian Leon Ó Broin edites the correspondence and provides an historical background and comprenhensive system of annotation. He brings the story up to Kitty Kiernan's death in 1945.
