Kennedy’s election as President of the United States on 8th November 1960 was a cause of great celebration in the land of his ancestors. In June 1963 he came to Ireland on an official visit, afterwards referring to the experience as the best four days of his life. He was greeted everywhere with jubilation, and his speech in the Dáil was an iconic moment in Irish self-awareness.
