My Wallet of Photographs. The Photographs of J.M. Synge Arranged and Introduced by Lilo Stephens. Dublin: Dolmen Press, 1971. One of 1050 copies printed. Pp, [xvi], with 53 plates + list of photographs. Quarter cloth, paper boards, Synge's monogram in gilt to upper cover, in publisher's grey dust jacket printed in black. Jacket lightly soiled, otherwise a near fine copy. The photographs are reproduced by the Green Studio Dublin, from the original negatives and have not been retouched. Published in the centenary year of Synge's birth, with a 16 page introduction by Lilo Stephens, wife of Synge's biographer & nephew Edward M. Stephens. When Synge died he left his camera together with a large number of negatives and prints to his nephew, Edward Stephens. Stephens had intended publishing these in his biography 'J.M. Synge 1871-1909' however as Stephens died before the book was published only a small number appeared in this edition. The present work contains all the photographs left to Edward Stephens with the exception of three which were lent by Anne Yeats. The work reproduces the surviving 53 photographs. Synge used a camera during his first visit to the Aran Islands to record facets of the life there and in other parts of Ireland, partly as a record of places and people which influenced his writings. This copy contains 5 original vintage photographs depicting Irish rural scenes loosely inserted.
