William Kirkpatrick Magee, who chose the pseudonym John Eglinton by which he became almost exclusively known, was born in Dublin. He attended the same school as Yeats, with whom he was to have a long-standing debate over the nature of the Irish Literary Revival. James Joyce featured Eglinton in his poem 'The Holy Office' and also has him appear in the 'Scylla and Charybdis' episode in Ulysses.
