The Peregrine. London: Collins, 1967. First edition. Cloth boards, title lettered in gilt to spine, in pictorial dust jacket. Faint erasure mark to front free endpaper, spotting to fore-edges, otherwise a near fine copy. Uncommon and now more so since it reached a new audience when a 50th Anniversary Edition was published in 2017. Baker's self-effacing diary of a long winter in the wild is a triumph of pure and immediate description. Regarded as one of the finest pieces of prose of the 20th century.
