The source of much controversy in its day, this seminal text remains one of the most important works of the 19th century. First published in 1859, it had gone through six editions by 1872. The sixth, final ‘life-time’ edition is of importance, since it is the first to use the term ‘evolution’ in its text. [Freeman 438].
