This fragment forms pages 532-554 of ‘Work In Progress’ the working title for Joyce’s not-yet-completed masterpiece, Finnegans Wake. [Slocum and Cahoon Joyce A41].

In his book review for the New York Times (11th January 1931), Herbert Matthews (editorial writer) says this fragment is “an attempt to enrich and refashion the English language, and as such is highly stimulating and carries the reader through a form of mental gymnastics which is not without its profit and amusement.”
