Hugh O’Neill was a leader of the Irish resistance against the English in the Nine Years’ War in the 17th century. He was later tried for treason along with O’Donnell. On 14 September 1607, both Earls set sail from Lough Swilly in Co Donegal with their families and followers for eventual exile in Spanish Flanders and Rome. Tyrconnell died in Rome in 1608.
