Published in the centenary year of Synge’s birth, with a sixteen page introduction by Lilo Stephens, wife of Synge’s biographer & nephew Edward M. Stephens.

When Synge died he left his camera together with a large number of negatives and prints to his nephew. Edward Stephens had intended publishing these in his biography ‘J.M. Synge 1871-1909’ however as Stephens died before the book was published only a small number appeared. The present work contains all the photographs left to Edward Stephens with the exception of three which were lent by Anne Yeats. The work reproduces the surviving 53 photographs. Synge used a camera during his first visit to the Aran Islands to record facets of the life there and in other parts of Ireland, partly as a record of places and people which influenced his writings.
