The War of the Gael with the Gail’ that is to say of the Irish with the Norsemen, has been frequently quoted by Keating. It was also known to Colgan, and the Four Masters have occasionally included portions of it in their Annals. For many years all copies of it were thought lost, but for the discovery of the Dublin MS. by Eugene O’Curry in 1840. Shortly after another copy was discovered in Brussels together with other important Irish manuscripts. This edition consists of a lengthy introduction of over 200 pages, followed by publication of the Gaelic text with accompanying English translation (with numerous footnotes). with a comprehensive index at the end of the volume.
