Thomas Crofton Croker was a Corkman of the ascendancy class who roamed the southern countryside collecting tales and folklore. An avid antiquary, he best known for his Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland.

‘Researches in the South of Ireland’ was Croker’s first book and according to his preface, the book was illustrated with pencil drawings by Miss Nicholson and Alfred Nicholson (his future wife and brother-in-law) who accompanied him on the field trip gathering material.

“The pretensions of this Volume are very humble, as it consists of little more than an arrangement of notes made during several excursions in the South of Ireland between the years 1812 and 1822. — These I have endeavoured to condense into a popular shape rather than extend by minute detail.”
