Measom’s guide was part of a broader series aimed at popularising railway travel across the British Isles. The 1866 volume focused on Ireland’s Great Southern & Western Railway, then the largest railway company in the country, connecting Dublin to Cork and extending to Limerick, Tralee, and Waterford.
It served as both a practical travel companion and a celebration of modern infrastructure, encouraging tourism and commerce. The guide includes hundreds of woodcut illustrations, depicting towns, landmarks, castles, abbeys, and industrial sites along the railway line; and two large folded maps of the North & South of Ireland showing the railway lines.
