Edmund Ludlow (c.1617-1692) was a prominent English Parliamentarian soldier and politician during the English Civil Wars and the Interregnum. He played a significant role in the conquest and administration of Ireland in the mid-17th century.

Ludlow was a committed republican and staunch opponent of monarchy. He served under Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War and later became Commander in Chief of the Parliamentarian forces in Ireland after Cromwell’s departure in 1650. Ludlow continued the brutal suppression of Irish Catholic resistance, particularly in the aftermath of the 1641 Rebellion and during the Cromwellian conquest. His campaigns were marked by sieges, confiscations, and the enforcement of English control. After the Restoration Ludlow had to flee to France for his safety and while their wrote his memoirs.
