The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in Ireland. with The true State and Condition of that Kingdom before the Year 1640; and the most material Passages and Actions which since that Time have contributed to the Calamities it hath undergone. London: T. Cooper, 1740. Third Edition. Pp 381. Rebacked, retaining original full calf boards. A nice bright copy.

Clarendon’s narrative of Irish affairs following the execution of Charles I—published as a supplement to his renowned History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England (1702–1704)—had earlier existed solely in manuscript form.

At the time, Edward Hyde, later Earl of Clarendon, maintained a close personal and political relationship with James Butler, the first Duke of Ormond (1610–1688), who led the Irish Protestant Royalists. Consequently, Clarendon’s depiction of the Irish Civil War serves, in part, as a vindication of Ormond’s actions and leadership.
