Wuthering Heights. London George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 1924. First Edition Thus. Bound in the publisher’s dark red cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, blue and blind. Neat gift inscription to endpaper. A fine bright copy.
Illustrated with colour illustrations by the British artist Perry Tarrant. Includes Charlotte Brontë’s preface and memoir of Emily and Anne Brontë.
This edition is considered a “first thus”—not the first printing of Wuthering Heights (which was 1847), but the first Harrap edition with Percy Tarrant’s illustrations.
In his illustrations, Tarrant offers a romanticised interpretation of Wuthering Heights, softening the harshness of its protagonists and landscape. This approach, characterised by rich colour and moody atmosphere, reflected contemporary preferences and served to make the classic novel more visually engaging for a broad audience.
