A central figure in contemporary Irish poetry Michael Longley was born in Belfast in 1939. His first collection of poetry, No Continuing City: Poems 1963-1968, was published in 1969.

He has won the Whitbread Prize, the T S Eliot Prize, the Hawthornden Prize, & the Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Poetry.
