The Complete Chronicles of Narnia. Illustrated by Pauline Baynes. London: HarperCollins Children’s Books, 2005. First Edition. Folio, quarter leather over burgundy cloth boards. Title lettered in gilt to upper cover, all edges in gilt; housed in publisher’s slipcase. A nice bright copy.
All the Chronicles are bound together here in one magnificent volume, with a special introduction by C.S. Lewis’s stepson, Douglas Gresham.
Pauline Baynes’s illustrations gave The Chronicles of Narnia their defining visual identity. C. S. Lewis chose her after seeing her work for J.R.R. Tolkien, and her clean line drawings, medieval influences, and expressive character work shaped how generations of readers imagined Narnia.
She illustrated all of the original seven books, creating maps, chapter headings, and full‑page scenes that balanced warmth with a sense of mythic grandeur. Her images established the look of creatures like Mr Tumnus, Aslan, and the Pevensies, and Lewis praised her ability to capture both the humour and the seriousness of his world
