The Martyr. London: Victor Gollancz, 1933. First Edition. Black cloth boards in publisher’s yellow dust jacket lettered in red & black. Creasing to cloth on boards, otherwise a fine bright copy.
The Martyr is a significant and controversial work by the acclaimed Irish author Liam O’Flaherty (1896-1984) and one of the five of his novels to be banned in Ireland.
Set during the Irish Civil War (1922-1923), the novel presents a fictionalised account of real events. It offers a stark perspective from the anti-Treaty side, examining the inadequacy of the Republican leadership and their ideological motivations.
This first edition is notably scarce, particularly in the original, fragile Gollancz dust jacket.
