The work was compiled by Philip Dixon Hardy, who also edited the Dublin Penny Journal. It features ten engravings by Benjamin Clayton, a noted wood engraver of the period. 

A weekly newspaper, published each Saturday between 1832 to 1836, the Dublin Penny Journal concerned itself with matters of Irish history, legend, topography, and Irish identity, and was illustrated with numerous maps and woodcuts.
