Tipped-in ALS from the author to Douglas Hyde: “Dear Sir, I take the liberty of sending this little Vol. of original verse, hoping it may meet with your approval and kind acceptance. I have many, many unpublished poems, long and short…”

At the time of this letter in 1908, Dr. Hyde was a leading figure in the Gaelic revival. He was the co-founder and president of the Gaelic League, an organisation dedicated to the revival of the Irish language and culture. That same year, he was appointed as the first professor of Modern Irish at University College Dublin. It was common for aspiring writers and poets to seek his endorsement due to his significant influence on Ireland’s literary and cultural landscape
