Carleton’s ‘Black Prophet’ was first issued in Dublin University Magazine, Vols. 27 & 28, Dublin 1846. The story is set just before the onset of the famine of 1847 and vividly portrays the Irish landscape, complete with rich dialogue and colourful character.
Features a critical introduction by David J. O’Donoghue, a prominent Irish biographer and literary historian, who published a biography on William Carleton in 1894. With plate illustrations by Jack B. Yeats, the renowned Irish artist and brother of poet W.B. Yeats.
