George Russell was a central figure in the Irish Literary Revival and although primarily known as a poet & writer he was also an accomplished painter. His art was deeply influenced by Theosophy, a spiritual movement that emphasises mysticism and the interconnectedness of all life. This small painting perfectly exemplifies Russell’s mystical vision. The dispersed light and anonymous figures characteristic of his luminous landscapes, provide an insight into the artist’s mystical visions directly inspired by Celtic folklore  – a recurring theme in his work.

George Russell and W.B. Yeats were deeply connected through their shared and profound interest in folklore, mysticism, and the spiritual traditions of Ireland. This connection was a foundational element of their lifelong friendship and a central driving force of the Irish Literary Revival.

Fisher Unwin’s “Children’s Library Series.” the first edition was published in 1892.
