Charles Lever (1806–1872) was a prolific Anglo-Irish novelist, physician, and diplomat who achieved fame in the mid-19th century as the author of rollicking picaresque tales of military and Irish life. Today, while he is less known than his contemporaries Dickens and Thackeray, Lever is remembered as “The Lost Victorian,” and modern scholars have noted the darker, more accomplished quality of his later works, which offer acute observation of character and politics.
