Macalister’s work on Irish prehistory from the earliest human habitation through to the end of the Bronze Age, arguing that this entire span was “pre-Celtic.”

His central contention was that Celtic and Iron Age culture did not arrive in Ireland until roughly the 4th century B.C. or later. He therefore treated the rich Irish Bronze Age—its gold ornaments and megalithic monuments—as the product of a non-Celtic population.
