Encounters. Stories. London: Sedgwick and Jackson, 1923. First Edition. Publisher’s original blue cloth with gilt lettering and decorated endpapers. Lacks the half-title page, wear along spine, otherwise a good copy.

Elizabeth Bowen’s debut work containing fourteen stories.

The collection was written when Bowen was in her early twenties, and she later looked back on these stories with a characteristic mixture of self-criticism and recognition, describing them as marked by ‘precocity and naivety.‘

The Spectator’s review of 21 July 1923 called Bowen “the most notable newcomer” to the company of short story writers.
