Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Illustrated by A. Rado. London and Leicester: Newman Wolsey Ltd., [1944]. Publisher’s blue clot) with gilt titling to the upper board, in original pictorial dust jacket. Light shelf-wear to jacket, otherwise a very good copy.
Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and seven additional full-page colour plates by Anthony Rado, accompanied by numerous black-and-white in-text illustrations throughout.
Featuring the distinctive artwork of Hungarian-born architect and artist Anthony (Antal) Rado, who settled in London in the 1940s. Rado’s interpretation of Carroll’s classic is noted for its imaginative deviations from the traditional Tenniel illustrations—most famously, Alice is depicted wearing an unusual red pinafore wrap dress, the White Rabbit’s house features a thatched roof shaped like rabbit ears, and the Mad Hatter’s price slip reads “£99” rather than the traditional “10/6” .
While occasionally compared to the work of Arthur Rackham, Rado’s style is generally considered less threatening and more whimsical.
A scarce wartime production.
