The illustrator, Newell Convers Wyeth, was a pivotal American artist whose work on this title defined how generations visualised the story.

The illustrations were originally commissioned for the American edition published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1911. This commission launched his long career illustrating classic adventure novels (including Kidnapped and Robinson Crusoe) and established him as a leading figure in American illustration.

This 1920’s edition is a later British reprint utilising those same iconic plates.
