J.J. Walsh He was a member of the Irish Volunteers from 1913 and fought in the 1916 Easter Rising as part of the Hibernian Rifles. He was sentenced to death for his role but was released under a general amnesty. Walsh was elected as a Sinn Féin MP in the 1918 general election and was a member of the First Dáil.

He supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty and became a founding member of Cumann na nGaedheal, serving as Postmaster-General (Minister for Posts and Telegraphs) from 1922 to 1927
