Faith Jaques had previously illustrated the 1968 UK edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, making her a natural choice for this sequel. Her illustrations are characterised by their detailed, workmanlike quality, and she also redrew the Oompa Loompas for the 1973 edition of the first book

First published in the United States by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. in 1972, a year after ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,’ and in the United Kingdom by George Allen & Unwin in 1973.
