Handsomely bound in full brown tree calf spine compartments richly decorated in gilt, with russet title label, boards margins with gile ruled fillet, all edges marbled. Mild scuffing to binding, contents in nice bright condition.

The first Charles Brock edition was published in 1895, containing numerous full-page illustrations throughout the text. C.E. Brock was one of four artist brothers one of which was another famous book illustrator Henry Matthew Brock.

A very respected & successful book illustrator he illustrated the works of authors such as Jonathan Swift, William Thackeray, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and George Eliot.

This copy was presented as a school prize to prolific writer & poet Monk Gibbon (School bookplate to front pastedown dated 1914).
