The play premiered at the 1953 Edinburgh Festival before its publication. It follows a wealthy entrepreneur who schemes to bring his illegitimate son, Colby, into his household by hiring him as a clerk.

After achieving great success at Edinburgh, the production transferred to London’s West End and later embarked on a UK tour.
