Adapted into an animated movie by Disney in 1961, The Hundred and One Dalmatians is a beloved children’s novel by English author Dodie Smith. The story follows Pongo and Missis, two Dalmatian dogs who embark on a daring adventure to rescue their stolen puppies from the clutches of the villainous Cruella de Vil—a fashion-obsessed woman with a sinister plan to turn the puppies into a fur coat.

Smith later wrote a sequel titled The Starlight Barking (1967), which takes the story into a more surreal and philosophical direction.
