A primary source of Irish History of the Middle Ages, the Annals were compiled under the patronage of Brian MacDermott, Chief of Moylurg, who resided in his castle on an island in Lough Key, near Boyle, Co. Roscommon. They begin with the Battle of Clontarf and continue up to 1636 treating on the whole with Irish affairs.

The only original copy of these Annals was purchased in Dublin in 1766 at a book sale of Dr John O’Fergus, by Dr Thomas Leland, a fellow of Trinity College Dublin, and presented to the library where it still resides.
