Compiled by Cathal Og Mac Maghnusa at Seanaidh Mac Maghnusa, now Belle Isle in Lough Erne, the Annals were so named by the noted ecclesiastic James Ussher, on account of their containing many chronicles relating to that province.
The Ulster Annals contain more detail on ecclesiastical history than that found in the more well-known Annals of the Four Masters.
