Robert Cane, a nationalist and physician, active in the Young Ireland movement wrote from a perspective sympathetic to Jacobite Ireland and the broader Catholic cause.

The Williamite–Jacobite Wars (1689-91) were decisive in shaping the political and religious landscape of Ireland. They pitted supporters of James II (Jacobites)—largely Catholic and Irish—against supporters of William of Orange (Williamites)—largely Protestant and aligned with English/British interests.
