Between 1915 and 1919 the Dublin Dockyard War Munitions Factory operated in Dublin Port. It was established by the Scottish born John Smellie, who was already operating the Dublin Dockyard Company since 1902. His ambitious attempt to establish a ship building industry in the City left a lasting legacy on the local community.
