Established in 1822 and disbanded in 1922 after the height of violence in 1921, the Royal Irish Constabulary served as a general police force in Ireland. It had to deal with the Volunteers on both sides of the Home Rule squabbles, enforce the unpopular land laws, and keep order throughout the Sinn Fein uprising.
