Published posthumously by his colleagues in University College Cork in 1928, the book is based on a surviving Henebry manuscript which lacks some pages but which is otherwise published in its entirety, with the addition some footnotes and indexes.

Ordained as priest in 1892, Richard Henebry had a great interest in Irish music and produced writings and books on the subject. When the National University of Ireland was established in 1909 he was appointed to the Chair of old and modern Irish at U.C.C. Among his friends and acquaintances were Roger Casement and Douglas Hyde.
