Thomas F. O’Rahilly is regarded as the foremost scholar of Modern Irish. Having held a temporary post in Irish at UCD he took up a permanent position as a clerk in the Four Courts in 1906. As director of the School of Celtic Studies from 1941 he oversaw a project to investigate the spoken dialects of Irish.
