The devotional journals of John Rutty (1698–1775), a Quaker physician, were first published in two volumes in 1776. Covering the period from September 1753 to December 1774 in brief daily entries, the journal documents the spiritual struggles of a respected doctor and prominent member of the Society of Friends in eighteenth-century Dublin. Rutty intended his work to encourage piety and virtue.

John Rutty settled in Dublin in 1724, where he practiced medicine for the rest of his life and was known for treating the poor without charge. He was also a respected naturalist and historian, writing works on mineral waters, the natural history of County Dublin, and the history of Irish Quakers.
