Michael Hartnett (1941–1999) was an Irish poet known for his work in both English and Irish, and for his dramatic decision to abandon English entirely for a period of his career.  He was a member of Aosdána and served as poetry editor of The Irish Times. Hartnett died in Dublin in 1999. His Collected Poems appeared posthumously in 2001, and the annual Éigse Michael Hartnett festival in Newcastle West honours his memory
