Inscribed by the Author, on the front free endpaper:

“The Vicar, Easter 1916, From J.H.B.”

A charming little book, whose poignant inscription coincides with the Easter Rising of April 1916.

John Henry Bernard (1860-1927) was an Irish Anglican clergyman who served as the 35th Provost of Trinity College Dublin from 1919 to 1927. He was appointed archbishop of Dublin in 1915 & served until 1919. A unionist by tradition and inclination, in a letter to The Times in 1916 he called for stern punishment for the 1916 rebels.
