Smithson, a committed nationalist and public health nurse, often infused her novels with political and social commentary, and ‘Katherine Devoy’ is no exception. While less famous than ‘The Marriage of Nurse Harding’ (1936), it remains a classic of Irish popular fiction from the mid-20th century.

Annie M.P. Smithson was the author of twenty-one novels and at least two collections of short stories. She was the best-selling novelist of her day with some of her books going into thirteen editions.
