Samuel Beckett’s Not I is a brief, intense dramatic monologue that is one of his most radical works for the stage. First performed at the Forum Theatre of the Lincoln Centre in New York in November 1972.

The play takes place in a pitch-black void. The only visible element is a single spotlight illuminating a woman’s disembodied mouth, suspended about eight feet above the stage. Everything else—the body, the face, the surroundings—is swallowed by darkness.
