Number 81 of 100 on Japan Vellum. Signed by James Joyce on half-title. With a “portrait” line drawing by C. Brancusi.

When Brancusi’s celebrated abstract portrait of Joyce was shown to John Joyce back in Dublin, he remarked of his son’s likeness: ‘The boy seems to have changed a good deal.’

This sole example of the sculptor Brancusi’s graphic contribution to a book is as important for the reproduction of his drawing as for the publication of Joyce’s fragments from his not-yet-completed masterpiece ‘Finnegans Wake. ‘ [Slocum & Cahoon A36].
