Patrick MacGill (1889-1963) was an Irish journalist, poet and novelist, known as The Navvy Poet because he had worked as a navvy in Scotland before he began writing. When war broke out in 1914 MacGill joined the London Irish Rifles and was injured in the battle of Loos in 1915.

One of several novels based on his own experiences on life in the trenches depicting the futility & awesome sacrifice made by millions.
