The copy was inscribed by Shaw at the Malvern Festiva in 1932. It was first produced in Warsaw in June 1929 and received its English premiere at the Malvern Festival on 19 August 1929.

Set in a future England where a constitutional monarch, King Magnus, outmanoeuvres a cabinet of mediocrities by threatening to abdicate and stand for Parliament. Contemporary critical reaction at Malvern was mixed—Shaw himself shrugged off the notices—though the play has since been regarded as one of his last substantial works.
